Thorp Arch Grange School 1970 onwards

My name is Vince Taylor and i was a pupil at Thorp Arch Grange School from 1970 to 1975, as many people will be aware that this school was run by the local authoraties and was a approved boarding school,I was born and raised in rothwell nr leeds, By the age of six we was a broken family and i was packed of to live with grandma, 1970,due to lack of perental guidance and total disrespect to elders i was taken into care and placed at Thorp Arch Grange aged 10,i remember as clear as day the arrival at the grange, The drive upto the school and into the main office to be greeted by mr john ingram ( house master to lee house)

I AM SEEKING ANY PAST PUPILS OR STAFF FROM THORP ARCH GRANGE SCHOOL OR ANYONE WHO HAS ANY PAST HISTORY AS 1970 ONWARDS, ALSO ANYONE WITH PHOTOS, I find it very sad that so many young lads like myself who was put through this institute at such a young age and to leave such a big impact in life that there seems to be no record of such times, I have revisited thorp arch grange and is now used for football training by leeds football club,my aim is to put together a short history about the 1970s at thorp arch grange school, I do remember most of the staff by name and recall all the school and housing building plan, ie lee house lorry churchill and kenedy house, please add to post or email me at office@abdroofing.co.uk

regards

Hi guys, it has been a few years since I first posted this on hear, thanks for all posting and leaving your comments about Thoprp arch grange school, we all know this place did exist and was a big part of all our life's, I have just run another search on google and data is now available about the school for different years, I re-visited the school last yea and sadly the school is almost demolished now, on closer I hope everyone who was fortunate or unfortunate to have spent part of there childhood in the school have accepted this through adult life, I hope everyone good health and continued happiness

My ex-husband (wouldn't be fair to give his name) gave evidence today (12.01.2017) in Leeds at the trial of Anthony Poles (77) Mark Wyllie (59) Paul Schoon Roy Allen (71) Roy Lovatt (70 - retired Priest!) of the 13 men arrested for sexual abuse as part of Operation Polymer, trial began 09.01.2017, expected to last 5 weeks. His abuse occurred in 1974. He gave his initial statement 16 years ago. My heart goes out to all of you. Stay strong, get the help you need, don't push your loved one's away, don't let the shame +/or guilt destroy who you are, they stole your youth, don't let them steal what's left, & if you can, report them, name them, shame them, it doesn't matter how many years have passed, if it'll bring you peace do it. Best Wishes to all of youxxxx

  54. Former Thorp Arch Grange staff sentenced to 46 years for child sex abuse crimes

    by Kieran Chatterton, Solicitor

Roy Lovatt and Roy Allen have been sentenced to a total of 46 years for child sex crimes at Leeds Crown Court. Lovatt was a housemaster at Thorp Arch Grange, Wetherby, while Allen was the director of education. Between them both, they were found guilty of 21 counts of sexual abuse, including rape. Mr Lovatt was sentenced to 28 years and Mr Allen to 18 years. Their lawyers said they will probably die in prison.

Three other men, Mr Schoon, Mr Poles and Mr Whiley, were acquitted of all charges.

In sentencing the two men, the Judge said that they were guilty of the most serious sexual offences on the most vulnerable children in society, who were placed in their care by the Courts. They had breached that trust in the most serious way imaginable.

Police investigations into the two men have been going on for over 5 years and the civil claims for compensation against Leeds City Council have been held up behind the criminal trials. Switalskis Solicitors represent many people who were abused by these men and the convictions will come as a great relief for the survivors of abuse. To many it will represent a real sense that justice has been done.

Some people have had their cases put on hold for several years, however, it is not too late to bring a claim for compensation. We believe that there is still a large number of victims of these men who have not spoken to anyone about what happened to them. It is still possible to bring a claim against the Council and we hope that victims will feel encouraged to come forward and seek advice.

We are representing many victims of abuse at Thorp Arch and other homes in the area, and our team has built up a great deal of experience pursuing such claims. We pride ourselves on being sympathetic and sensitive to how difficult it is to talk about such difficult memories from the past. If you would like to speak to a member of our specialist team in confidence, call: 0800 138 4700

  55. Another story has hit the headlines of a case involving a school teacher and a house master abusing their position of trust and authority to groom a number of victims at the school where they were working.

As with a number of my previous blog posts, the prosecution followed witness accounts from historical cases, from people who were abused years ago, but felt they were unable to speak up because they wouldn’t be believed.

This latest case concerns Roy Allen and Roy Lovett who have been charged with molesting several victims during the 1970s and 1980s whilst working at the Thorp Arch Grange School in West Yorkshire. Allen was teaching at the time of carrying out the offences, later becoming a deputy head and then eventually a Headmaster at the school. Together with Lovett, who was Housemaster at the time, they were able to contrive and use their positions of power to silence their victims against the horrific crimes being carried out.

As well as being able to abuse their positions of power, there was further issue relating to the school itself. It was an institution that took in young people from children’s homes, courts or local authorities. They were seen as “troubled”, sometimes coming from difficult domestic situations and some even involved in petty offending. Not only were Allen and Lovett’s victims battling abuse of power, but their own inferiority in society as well.

When standing trial, the victims said they felt “utterly unable to complain” and regarded as naughty boys who would not be believed. What’s more, if the Headmaster is one of the people committing the abuse, who was going to listen to them?

But they were listened to, even some 30 to 40 years later. Lovett, who is now 71, was found guilty of four charges of indecent assault and five of serious sex assaults against two boys. He also admitted 23 charges of indecent assault and two of gross indecency on three other boys and one girl. He was jailed for 28 years. Allen, now 72, was found guilty of nine charges of indecent assault, two of serious sex assault and one of attempted serious sex assault involving four boys in the 1970s. He was jailed for 18 years.

It’s a very sad state of affairs, made worse for the fact that the victims must have felt totally powerless. But, the thing to remember is that it is never too late to disclose information relating to an abuse case. This information can be used to bring criminals to justice and victims can seek recompense or closure for the horrific crimes they were subjected to.

  57. The school obviously went down hill fast from the mid sixties onwards. There were very few problems there before then, especially late 50's to 1960 when I left.
